Meet us at Wild Expeditions in Bluff, Utah. After checking in at our office we will load the van and head west of Bluff on Highway 191. We’ll ride through Comb Ridge over the Lime Ridge Anticline towards Mexican Hat. You’ll learn about the different geology and history of the area as we get off the pavement and climb 1200’ up the Moki Dugway. The Moki Dugway was built in the early 1950’s to haul Uranium Ore off of Cedar Mesa. The road is cut right from the side of the cliffs and offer breathtaking views in every direction. You will be glad that you are not driving so you can soak in the views and take pictures instead of worrying about driving off the edge of the world. The van will stop at several lookouts on the climb up.
Once on top of Cedar Mesa we hit pavement again and get a great view of the Bears Ears. We’ll follow that road till we hit Highway 95 and head back towards Blanding. Our first stop is the Mule Canyon Ruins which is a restored Kiva, which we’ll enjoy while also taking advantage of the restrooms located here. After our quick pit-stop we’re off to one of our favorite off the path locations. We’ll view 1000 year old towers built around a spring that still runs year round today. With binoculars we can see an entire village of cliff dwellings built in the canyon below the rim. As of today none of these sites are marked and are difficult to find so we often have this place to ourselves.
Once we finish exploring the towers we’ll load back up and find another dirt road nearby taking us to our favorite overlook in all of Bears Ears. The guides will prep lunch for the group while you get those Instagram pics that friends stuck back home in their offices can dream about. Spoiler alert – those instagram pics will never be as good as seeing it in person. Just don’t fall as it’s an 800’ sheer drop down into Arch Canyon.
After lunch it’s another scenic ride off Cedar Mesa through Comb Ridge along Butler Wash to Highway 191 and back to our shop in Bluff. Round trip this is about a 3 hours of driving broken up into 30 – 45 minute sections to get you oriented with the Bears Ears and you’ll want to come back to see more of what the many canyons have to offer.
