Now taking reservations for 2010 San Juan River trips.

"But the San Juan country proper, between the Abajo Mountains and Monument Valley, and between the Colorado boundary and Glen Canyon of the Colorado, is the heart of the last great wilderness. Through the middle of it, flowing in a continuous canyon to its junction with the Colorado 133 miles westward, runs the San Juan River, as little known and as little celebrated as the country it drains."
-  Wallace Stegner, 1948

Going for the Light: 2010 Dory Trip Focusing on Art and Phototography

Location: San Juan River, Bluff to Clay Hills, 83 Miles

Start Date: 5/15/10  End Date: 5/21/10

Duration: 7-Days

The focus of this trip is to provide time for your art and photography, whether you work professionally, as an amateur, or simply enjoy journaling. We will travel in what we consider to be the Cadillac of all boats; whitewater dories. Our brightly painted dories, in their graceful repose and playful interaction with swift water, have inspired many professional artists and photographers. Under the direction of photographer, Kate Thompson, and artist, Serena Supplee, we plan on prolonged stops at what we think are some of the best landscapes and intimate subject matter related to the San Juan River and desert Southwest.

Price: $1800 per person

Overview

The focus of the first half of this trip will be hiking and visiting the plethora of pre-historic rock art panels, dwellings, and ceremonial sites of the Anasazi culture. We'll also be hiking atop ridges and slick rock to gain large landscape views. We have the luxury of choosing among the vast array of sites based on the quality of light at this time of year. Halfway through our trip we will then enter the canyon doors of the infamous Goosenecks of the San Juan River. The focus then shifts from archeology, at this juncture, to swift water, small rapids, and hikes to grottos and narrow side canyons with beautiful reflected light. Guides Brad Dimock, Kate Thompson, R.J. Johnson, and Andy Hutchinson, will have their usual bag of tricks to include stories, history, music, and geology.
